Sup guys, it's Tuesday, so I'm comin at ya with another Gundam review! Up this week is the 1/100 HG Nataku, the EW Ver. (Fellow Wing fans will know this Gundam isn't really called the Nataku, but the Altron, but that's neither here nor there.)

Week 5- 1/100 HG XXXG-01S2 Nataku (Altron)-
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917925.jpeg

For Starters-
Like I said, this kit isn't really the Nataku. That's pilot Chang Wufei's nickname for it, after his deceased fiance. Technically it's the Altron, or Shenlong, or whatever you really wanna call it. This is the version from Endless Waltz, with the dual arm-mounted Dragon Fangs. We all know I love Wing, and this kit looked pretty cool. Wish I didn't have to write this review, for once.

Here's why.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917920.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917921.jpeg
[Sorry about the hand, his balance is rather pitiful.]

Articulation-
Probably the worst as far as articulation of any of the Wing HG's I've built. This thing is rough. It's pretty similar to it's fellow 90's kits, but the bulk of this thing makes posing really hard. [Before I really get in to this, I'd like to say the polycaps on this were just plain awful- I had a horrible time getting them to fit properly almost anywhere on the kit, and in some cases just used other ones I had kickin around. I'm not sure if it was just my particular kit or not, but I'm attributing this to age.)

The head's on a ball joint, and can almost 90 in either direction, which isn't too bad. It has a little bit of up-and-down and side-to-side. The head is probably the best part as far as articulation. (And man, that V-fin pops off just by lookin' at it!) The waist is pegged in, as usual, allowing for about 45 degrees to either side.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917922.jpeg

The arms will go up about 90, but they will not stay for long due to the weight of the fangs. The elbows are double jointed, and if you pull the polycap out a little, it can ALMOST do a 180, but once again, weight becomes an issue, and thus it will sag. Hands are typical 90's hands, with a seperate trigger finger and 3 lower fingers, however the thumb is stationary, like the F-90 kits. They're ball jointed, as always.

The front skirts are seperate, but have very little movement, much like the side skirts. Rear skirt is one solid piece. The legs are attached to the waist via ball joints, but have very limited movement, even for a 90's kit.

The knees are double jointed, but will BARELY do a ninety. They DID bother to make the toe and heel of the foot two separate pieces, but in this case it was an awful decision, as it makes standing even more difficult than it already is. The feet are attached via ball joints, but for some reason can only move in and not out.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917924.jpeg

Articulation on the fangs is nice, they are attached to a piece of armor that's on the arms, which swings downwards over the hand. After that, you pull the red part out, putting it straight in front of the Gundam. There's a little wiggle room between each "link" of the red part, which is nice. But it's all for naught, because they weigh so much they just immediately sag down, meaning posing him like this is impossible. The fangs can open and close, and also move in and out.

All in all, this thing can barely stand in a static pose, let alone anything else, which is pretty disappointing.

Armaments-
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917917.jpeg
Aside from the arm-mounted Fangs, the only accessory is this Beam Trident, which is true to the anime. I really don't have much to say about this, except "What the hell, Bandai." It's not molded in the proper color. Normally I'd say "whatever, no big deal", but in this case, they not only HAD a grey runner, but the staff part is molded in grey as it SHOULD BE...With NO WAY to attach the beams! Seriously? Once again, I disapprove.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917918.jpeg
If nothing else, at least it's pretty unique amidst the sea of beam sabers and heat hawks...Anyone else notice the nice variety the Wing suits had as far as melee weapons?
Anyone, moving on.

Stickers and Decals-
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/02/05/917926.jpeg
My opinion of this kit is not very high so far, and it gets worse here. Much worse. This kit is old, and I DON'T expect it to be all molded in color, but look at how many stickers they give you! Again, are you kidding me? It would have been SUPER easy to put the seafoam chest piece over a yellow "base" part (standard with many gundam kits), which would have eliminated a lot of these...and the "crotch" armor is black, with the seafoam green stickers. Why the hell didn't they just mold it in seafoam green? That color is already on a runner! So instead of making one additional yellow and seafoam piece, they gave us a bunch of crap stickers. Furthermore, I find it highly unlikely they would even stay, given the fact they are on parts that curve. Disappointing. I didn't even bother applying them. They're going straight in the trash can, and this guy is getting a nice paint job when I have time.

My Final Impression-
The design of this Gundam is cool. I really wanted to like it, but there are just too many glaring flaws to let this one slide. It is hardly even comparable to the HG's of it's decade, let alone now! Unless you absolutely NEED this Gundam, I would stay away. The awful color molding is bad enough, but when you add in the fact he can hardly do a pose, or even hold it for that matter, I'm amazed this kit was even made in the first place. On top of that, it feels a lot "cheaper", plastic-wise, than most kits. Not sure if it's just mine in particular, but I feel it would shrapnel if dropped. And it's not even as cheap as, say, Deathscythe or Wing 0, which are both MUCH better IMO. I really hate to just tear in to a Gundam like this, but this is just my honest opinion on this kit.

Pros
-Unique design, definitely stands out
-Dragon Fangs are really cool, bummer they weigh so much!

Cons
-Awful color molding
-Awful balance
-Fairly poor articulation
-Dragon Fangs are pretty much unusable without a stand dedicated specifically to them

He didn't stay like this for long, as his arms inevitably sagged down to his sides.

If you're a Wing fan like me, then I hate to disappoint, but this kit isn't worth it. Get something else. You'll probably thank me later. I'm still gonna try to salvage this trainwreck, but it's gonna take a good bit of time and a lot of effort with masking and such to make this thing shine.
This really does sadden me, but it's just the way it is. Sorry Wufei, but this is a 6 out of 10.

As always, thanks for reading! For those of you who have kept with me from week to week, I'm sure you've noticed I've mostly done Wing and SEED kits. (Not really intentional, just what I had in the closet, lol.) Anyway, I feel like taking a break from After Colony and Cosmic Era, so be sure to swing by next week! I'll be hittin up an old Universal Century kit- The 1/100 MG Zaku II, EFSF Ver. (The Katoki-Sama Zaku kit, for those who didn't know!)

Until then, from windy Wyoming-
See ya, space cowboy!

EDIT:
Some of you commented on how plain the kit looked. That's the effect of a rush job. I always recommend at least lining. Anyway, after a little lining and touch ups, this kit looks much better.

katsudon6年前#1971245Wow, I didn't know it looked that bad color wise... You did a good job building and painting it, but geez, it just doesn't look impressive whatsoever. =/
I actually didn't paint this kit, couldn't find the right colors at the hobby shop. That happens too frequently, which is why more often than not I just do custom jobs. I really wanted to keep him in his stock colors though, so I didn't touch it.

WindsorSeven6年前#1971666Your lack of love for this kit made for an amusing read, but for your sake I hope the next Gundam can at least stand on it's own. I'm looking forward to it! I really WANTED to love this kit, cuz I love this Gundam, but it just wasn't all there, lol. This week's Gundam not only stood on his own, but can do it one-footed, much like the HG Deathscythe, lol.

darkrose6年前#1971820Lol I think this kit actually has a great concept and design which unfortunately do not translate well to the actual product because of the over-sized dragon fangs. The 1/144 version is also having the same issue.
Anyway, I find it amusing to read this post -filled with both liking and irritation towards the kit-. Will be interesting to read should you review 1/100 Gundam Wing Zero Customs with its super heavy wings and guns and can make no pose printed on the box.

The design of this kit is awesome, I totally agree. That's why I gravitated towards it. On top of that, you know how much I love Wing, lol. I was just bummed. I'd love to see this kit get a MG upgrade. And as far as Zero Custom, I'm probably gonna snag the MG, I know what you mean by sagging rifles...My HG Wing Zero can't hold his rifles for jack, and def. can't do any box-art poses! Lol. I had to do the super glue trick just to keep him standing, he fell over constantly.

Keripo6年前#1972073I'm curious to see how the Dragon Fangs weight balance compares to the 1/100 MG GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam's Trikeros when extended, or the 1/100 MBF-P01-ReAMATU Gold Frame Amatsu's Absorption Claws when rotated forward.
Regardless, the colouring here of your kit build seems a tad bit... flat? :/ Do you mind uploading a picture of the box? I believe there were two official 1/100 kits of the EW Gundam: Nataku and Altron. Your kit result looks drastically different from ones other people have built, like here, here, and here. Either that or those kit builders spent some time post-polishing their kits.

Ya know dude, I literally never even noticed how similar Blitz and Astray Gold were until you posted both those pics side by side. I've read reviews on the Astrays, and from what I've heard, both Blue and Gold have serious weight problems. And as far as Blitz is concerned, I hope to find out one day soon for myself. Blitz is one of my fav designs from the Cosmic Era, and I've wanted the MG forever. (Not really sure why I haven't bought it yet, lol)
And it looks like your questions were mostly answered, but let me clarify-
Rudra is correct, it's the EW Altron. And you're both correct, I didn't hardly touch this thing, even with Gundam markers. I originally had plans to fully paint it, but that fell through. I was in a rush to get the review done in time, and as such uploaded some half-assed pics. The colors ARE really flat out of the box, but it's nothing a little touch-up work can't fix. (I'll throw a pic in at the bottom of the blog as an edit of how the kit looks now, after some lining and touch-ups...nowhere near as bad!)

GarrusaurusWrex6年前#1976688I only bought HG when first building these models (and most of them were Deathscythe models -- wing fan over here, too, lol!). Need to start saving for MG and a PG kit. the HGs looked to bad and cheap in my room lol.Well all of us have to start somewhere, right? HG's can definitely look a little bland, especially these older kits, but even they can shine given the amount of time or effort you spend on them. I myself have never built a Perfect Grade yet, but I highly recommend you try out a master grade. They're not hard to build, per say, but rather just require more attention to detail. The end result is definitely worth it. I have the MG 1/100 Heavyarms in my closet right now, and I'm super excited about that one. I'll probably build/review it in a couple weeks, I'll let ya know when I do!

Keripo6年前#1973236Hm, might just be the camera/lighting, but PICTURE #917918 just looks drastically contrasted to PICTURE #918940 for example. I guess that just shows how drastic a difference post-assembly painting and inking makes.
Before, my original plan was to have the 1/60 PG Wing Zero Custom, then the 1/100 MG EW vers of Deathscythe Hell Custom, Sandrock Kai, Heavyarms Custom, Shenlong, Epyon, and Tallgeese. Now after looking at Shenlong vs Altron vs Altron EW Ver (Nataku), I'm finding myself prefer Nataku's overall design much more and hoping they'll make a MG kit in the future... why in the world did they make MGs of all the other Gundam's EW forms, but not an MG Altron (either Katoki's or Okawara's design)? >_<
~Keripo

Maybe, but from this pic s1.tsuki-board.... I think seen plastic swirl pattern on left front skirt armor, painted one shouldn't have that. And the twin Beam Trident is still green (should be gray)

I've never done any PG, the most expensive gunpla I own is MG Hi-Nu haha. Sandrock and Heavyarms Kai hasn't got any MG, same with Altron and Tallgeese II/III. You can see the list here bandai-hobby.net/site/MG/lineup_w.html. Well, Heavyarms and Sandrock Kai's upgrade isn't that much anyway if you watch the TV series. And all of Wing MG line is Katoki design even the ITEM #133734. Gonna buy one later.

Rudra6年前#1972751The color still looks plastic, maybe it's still snap-fitted build. I own one and it's hands got weak fast when posed with Dragon Fang being extended.
The one he built is ITEM #8127 redesigned version of Altron Gundam for Endless Waltz by Katoki, the one you called Altron is the one on TV series designed by Okawara.
