S.H Figuarts Sailor Moon Anime Repaint
Is she worth the money?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664264.jpeg

The Sailor Moon Figuarts line has been expanding well over the last year. With the recent announcement of a Tuxedo Kamen and Chibi Moon, the line gets more and more exciting for me! The Sailor Moon Anime colour repaint featured at the Tamashii Nations event has just arrived at my doorstep. I have been eagerly waiting to review it for what seems like forever. I think the big question with this item is…is this figuarts worth the money? After all, we have already been given a Sailor Moon figuarts, one with bonus release faces and one without. In this review I hope to answer some questions, and express both my likes and dislikes on the figure. I shall be comparing both the 1st release and the anime repaint. Enjoy!

Packaging

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663557.jpeg

The item itself came wrapped in the usual postal packaging. However, I found there was a second layer of cardboard packaging around the item. It must have come like this at the Tamashii Nations event.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663559.jpeg

The packaging itself is completley different to the style we are used to seeing in this line. It looks very modern, very simple and quite sleek. I love the large image of Sailor Moon on the front and the background they have used. It is a night scene but I wish they'd lightened the figure a bit more...she seems a bit too dark. The fine writing on the photograph briefly describes the figuarts brand and the details of the figure inside. The writing and the strange shapes remind me of an FBI style computer!

For collectors that like to display and never open, the box is a bit of a dissapointment. Compared to the original box, there is no window to see inside. The box also has less imagery of the figure on its outside, which could be a downside to some. The Tamashii Nations golden logo is still very clearly displayed on the box, therefore making it easy to tell if the item is an original. (Gold for Japan release, silver for international release).

The Stand

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663877.jpeg

The only thing different about the stand compared to the 1st release stand is the painted pattern. I personally do really like this, a lot more than the 1st. I love it's detail. It does compliment the figure's paint colour, as you shall see.

Unboxed

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663879.jpeg

You can immediatley see the colour difference between the original and the anime colour version. The anime colours pop with a vibrance that in my opinion is lacking in the original. The white is brighter, the blue of her skirt and collar is darker and the boots radiate an orange-based red. The figure paint is matte. There are, of course, more faces that come with the 1st edition release, but this version has an extra face that the 1st does not. The anime colour version of Luna is also matte, whereas the 1st has more of a sheen.

Sculpt

New Expression

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663885.jpeg

The new face is very cute and is a must have for an avid Sailor Moon collector, or collector of this line. It captures Usagi's sweet and cheeky personality perfectly. It is quite obviously, however, a modded repaint/mould of the open-mouthed happy face that both Jupiter and Venus come with. I think Bandai have lured in a lot of potential buyers with this face plate alone...but, with a little patience and a steady hand, you could always make your own!

Ball Joints

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663968.jpeg

It seems that Bandai learned from their mistakes and made Sailor Moon's wrist joints the same as the other Senshi after the 1st release and re-release. The ball joint accepts the hands much easier than the peg joint. It is nice to see Bandai going to this extra effort, rather than completley recasting the original.

Thigh Joints

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663976.jpeg

Figuarts Sailor Saturn really stands above the others in terms of her hip joint style - the joints flow much more smoothly and looks less awkward in more extreme poses. Unfortunatley, Bandai kept the not-so-sightly hip joints of the 1st release of Sailor Moon. I do wish they'd thought about changing this as such a small change can really make a huge difference in displaying the figure.

Other than what I have mentioned, the figure is pretty much the same in sculpt as the 1st release.

Paint

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663974.jpeg

Now this is where I really get to compliment this item. I absolutley love the paint job. The hair is visually much more striking as it is brighter and more opaque. I do really enjoy the mattified effect - to me it looks better quality. That red really pulls in the eye, and combined with the darker blue, makes the white radiate. She is clean looking and beautiful. Her boots and the stand match so well. Her skin is also more matte and has less of a sheen than the original, which I prefer. The red jewel on her tiara looks slightly darker, but that might be just me.

I wonder if Bandai sensed an opportunity to make more money...in the early prototype photographs of the original, her boots and bows etc are dark red. Then later changed this to a metallic pink colour. Perhaps they knew they could make another figure later, more true to the anime version? Who knows ey! They've got me hooked anyway! Odangos

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415663970.jpeg

The paint is crisper on the anime colour version and I think the white, compared to the silver of the 1st release, really makes the odango jewel pop.

Hair

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664029.jpeg

The ends of her hair are opaque, as well as the ends of her fringe (or bangs) compared to the semi-transparent nature of the original. I do really like this transparency but I'm more attracted to the vibrancy of this new release.

Face Plate Difference

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664033.jpeg

It came to my attention that the paint is applied slightly differently on the two figures's face plates. It was most prominent in these two face places. The shadow at the top of the blue in the eye is darker and more contrasting in the newer release. The detailed lines of her lips and blush lines are also a darker red, rather than the pink that the original used.

Figure Parts

Hands and Wands

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664035.jpeg

The hands are exactly the same mould, but a slightly brighter white. The same can be said for the wands, but there is literally no difference I can see (the top set is the anime colour version, the bottom is the 1st release). I am so, so disappointed that they missed a chance to create a Cutie Moon Rod with the anime colour version - it just seemed a perfect opportunity missed. But who knows, perhaps they have future plans for this.

Expressions

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664031.jpeg
(The 1st edition also comes with a simple smiling face I seem to have missed here...I think it was still on the figure, doh!!)

The top row shows the face plates included in the anime colour release, and the bottom shows the 1st edition release. You can see the slight differences I have mentioned above. A big question I was wondering was whether or not the limited edition face plates of the 1st release would fit onto the anime colour version...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664262.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664202.jpeg

And alas, they do!

Luna

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664137.jpeg

A very visible difference between the two Lunas was that they had fixed the obvious white neck joint showing on the original Luna. Because of this, the anime version of Luna looks chubbier and cuter in the face. I'm really hoping that the more I play with her, I won't discover the neck joint becoming more visible. But we shall see! You can see that the anime colour version is more matte.

Defects

There really are very few poor paint or sculpt areas. Here I feel I am being quite picky.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664037.jpeg

Her crystal wand does have quite an obivious smudge that looks like it goes right down to the sculpt, and not just a paint error.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664139.jpeg

A dark smudge on the knee.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664145.jpeg

Her arm joint connection is slightly showing. This arm is very stiff and I struggle to move it, so perhaps I will need to take it off and reposition it. My Mercurys arm falls off all the time, so I know it can be done, but I'm very hesitant. I'd rather wait and see if it becomes more pliable with time.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664194.jpeg

Paint clumps on her side.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664196.jpeg

A very fine and minor paint wobble.

Now, do I think she is worth the money? Drumroll please...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/1esf1415664373.jpeg

I do absolutely prefer this version to the original. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the pink metallic elements to the original (and she has a special place in my heart as my boyfriend bought me her, therefore re-igniting my love for Sailor Moon) but I prefer the high contrasting, bold colours of the anime version. I think she will display better with the other senshi in this line. As for the main question, I think she is only worth the money if you are a major fan of this line, or if you adore Sailor Moon. To someone wondering which one to buy if they haven't got either, I would go with the first release original as she has more varied face plates. The transparent hairstyle she has in the original version is also lovely. If you could only get the re-release of the original (without the bonus faces) or the anime colour version, I would go for the anime version...her paint is exquisite and you'll have the bonus of that extra face plate.

Overall, I hope my review has helped shed some light on the differences and similarities between the two. I can sense some fighting between the two figures when Tuxedo Kamen comes out...

Thanks for reading!!

FSLAR (4年前) #2462836Question, how much did you pay for this? And where did you buy it from? I love the comparisons, helped out so much.

I bought her from Nippon Yasan for 7,500¥, she was quite pricey. I think you have to be really sure that you want this figure, which I hope my review can help you with :)

I've been hmming over her since her announcement... but I love what you posted. Great review!
Though, that's not an issue with the paint, or with touching the piece before it cooled. It looks like an injection point, though a weird one. They're usually at an end, but it might be placed in the middle to make sure the crescents filled properly.
If it were an issue with touching the part before it cooled the part would have to be practically still molten plastic lol. As someone who has worked with plastic for 1/3 of my life I can tell you that that's not something you want to handle, nor does it come out of the machine that early. It'd be warped to hell without the mould cooling it properly.

I'm so glad I could help you choose!

Thanks for commenting and thanks for enlightening me also :)

Dampiel (4年前) #2455020All in all a pretty well done review.
I do have a couple of issues. First lamenting the lack of a Cutie Moon Rod is kind of pointless since as this is just a recolor there was never a chance of it coming with an all new accessory. Second and this falls in the same category as the rod the hips were always going to be the same as the original since it is the same figure, for them to have changed them would have required new tooling which runs in the tens of thousands of dollars (that goes for the rod as well). The only other thing is the defect in the wand isn't a sculpt issue as if it were all three releases of them would have it, so it's more likely that some one at the factory touched it before it was completely cool.

Thanks for commenting, I totally see what you mean. Maybe my wishes were a little too high :P
