Second hand waifus deserve a second chance at laifu!

Alter 1/8 Eri SawachikaAlter 1/8 Eri Sawachika

Today we'll be reviewing a figure that had been on and off my wish list probably a dozen times over the years, Alter's Eri Sawachika, released all the way back in February 2007. This is a beach figure, so many of the shots below could be considered a little bit NSFW.

About the character: Eri Sawachika is a character from the School Rumble anime and manga. Born to a British/Japanese father and Japanese mother, Eri spent much of her life living in England before returning to Japan. Her family is wealthy, and she is admired for her exotic (western) beauty, but she also shows a melancholic streak, as she sometimes feels like a little bit of an outsider among her friends. Eri also has some tsundere traits which become most apparent when she's interacting with classmate Harima.

Packaging----------8/10

Because of her pose, you get to see the entire figure through the front window. This would be a big plus if you keep your figures in the box.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714648.jpeg

The sides of the box have small windows.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714650.jpeg

The box is surprisingly plain!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714652.jpeg

The front window wraps around to the top of the box. With this design, I'm always afraid of damaging the flap when opening the figure...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714654.jpeg

Eri in the blister.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714656.jpeg

As you can see, Eri herself sits on top of a sub-blister which prevents her from coming into contact with the base. The base is not painted, so I wouldn't think there is any danger of the base staining the figure, but this is a nice feature all the same.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714751.jpeg

There are two small pegs on the base which keep Eri positioned; one sits behind Eri's elbow and the other is behind her knee.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714753.jpeg

That base is large, and it adds quite a bit of mass to the package. The box measures 26 by 17 by 15 cm and figure and box weigh just under 500 grams. Thus, Eri will cost a little more to ship than the typical 1/8 scale figure.

Posing----------8/10

Eri's pose is something of a unique departure from the standard trio of standing/sitting/kneeling poses. The way she's peering over her shoulder is also pretty interesting. When I bought Eri, I was concerned about the possible range of angles from which she could be viewed, but it turns out she looks quite nice from a number of different viewpoints.

Let's have a look at her.

Her pose does make for some challenges in displaying Eri (she will easily be overwhelmed by standing figures and she looks best when viewed from eye-level or above), but Alter deserves some credit for doing something different than the same old-same old.

Sculpting----------6.5/10
Painting----------8.5/10

As a figure made in the dark ages of 2007, Eri definitely has some flaws in her finish, including several issues you'd never see in an Alter figure made these days.

Let's start with the positive. The figure nicely recreates several of Eri's key features, including her puffy bangs. Her amber eyes are another one of her unique traits.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714885.jpeg

I like the way Eri is peering over her shoulder; it brings to mind the sometimes-tsundere aspect of her personality.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714887.jpeg

Below is a shot of the figure along with Eri as she appears in the anime. If I was being critical, I'd say that her facial expression appears maybe just a little too severe. It's also worth noting that her black bikini shows up a few times in the anime, although there are subtle differences in its various appearances. The screenshot below features the first appearance of the bikini in episode 12. As you can see, this iteration of the bikini has a little purple rose on its front. Another variant appears in the ending animation of season one, as can be seen on ITEM #65612. That version of the bikini is much plainer, without any of the purple highlights.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715202.jpeg

Eri's huge bangs are consistent with her character design, but they do tend to obscure her face from certain angles.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714889.jpeg

You can see a couple rough spots in the finish of her twintails. Maybe this is me being picky, but the way her ponytails merge into the hair ribbons kind of bugs me a little bit...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714891.jpeg

Maybe it's me, but her hair color seems a little bit greenish. Perhaps she's been to the pool; chlorine sometimes will do that to blonde hair...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714942.jpeg

The purple and black color scheme of her bikini is kind of interesting. The strings and the tie are sculpted nicely, and I like how you can see the material of her bikini top stretching ever so slightly...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714944.jpeg

One very weird flaw involves the sculpt of the straps on Eri's top. The straps are very, very thick in places! It's almost like Alter was trying to create the normal plane to her body at that point. There's your applied mathematics for today...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714946.jpeg

I hadn't noticed this until taking these photos, but her arm looks very weird when seen from this angle.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428714948.jpeg

I like how Alter sculpted her stomach, however.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715013.jpeg

The purple trim on her bikini bottom matches the color scheme of her top, but there's a very obvious mold line running right down the middle of her thigh. That's the type of thing you'd never see on an Alter figure today.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715015.jpeg

Another mold line on her other leg. Also, the purple trim on her bikini bottom is a little raggedy-looking in spots and in certain spots the transition from material to flesh isn't too smooth.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715017.jpeg

There's a clear gap between the purple trim and the rest of Eri's swimsuit. Also, there's a really nasty flaw on the back of her thigh.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715019.jpeg

Her back is nicely sculpted, and the head-to-neck transition looks okay.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715021.jpeg

This is the way I've got her positioned in my display. I really like the way she looks from this angle!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715074.jpeg

Base----------8/10

The base is about 8 inches (20 cm) long, about 4 inches (10 cm) wide, and it's about 2.5 in (6 cm) tall at its highest point. It's not outrageously large, but it will occupy a nontrivial amount of space on a crowded shelf. You can see the two small pegs which keep Eri in place.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715076.jpeg

If you prefer, Eri can be displayed just fine without using the base, but as we'll see that makes for some potential challenges in posing her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715078.jpeg

Scale Comparison

Not factoring in the base, Eri is about 3.5 inches (9 cm) in height, and she spans about 7.5 inches (19.5 cm) horizontally. I estimate she'd be about 8 inches (20 cm) tall if she were standing, which at 1/8 scale would make her right about 5'4" (160 cm). Her canon height is 165 cm, so her listed 1/8 scale seems about right.

Eri with Haruka Suzumiya ITEM #43 . Haruka is also 1/8 scale, and you can see that around smaller-scale kneeling/sitting figures, Eri could reasonably be displayed without her base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715143.jpeg

Eri with some of my other favorite blonde beach girls. Nagi Sanzenin ITEM #5586 is a smallish 1/6, and Miki ITEM #98895, Misty ITEM #153426, and Sena ITEM #106566 are 1/7. You can see how without her base Eri will get a little overwhelmed by standing figures.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715265.jpeg

Displaying her on her base helps remedy this issue, but this is something to keep in mind if you're considering adding Eri to your collection.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715267.jpeg

I'm guessing Yotsuba would be very intrigued by Eri's blonde hair!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1428715200.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------8.5/10

Arguments for: Her expression (even if a little severe) is in character for Eri, the figure nicely recreates her exotic good looks, the black bikini actually appears in the anime, and if you are an Eri fan, there aren't that many figures of her to choose from.

Arguments against: Somewhat marginal quality (compared to newer figures), her base occupies quite a bit of space, Eri's pose means she can be overwhelmed by larger-scale figures, and unless you have a connection to the character, she might be just another beach figure.

This figure has been on and off my wish list many times, and my interest in the School Rumble franchise has waxed and waned over the years, although I'd had my eye on her ever since she was first released. I always thought that Eri was the most interesting character of the School Rumble crowd, and she kept beckoning me on AmiAmi's preowned section. I'm glad I picked her up, and if you need an old-school beach figure or if you're a School Rumble fan, I'd recommend her.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard too find, but not exactly common.

She's not common these days, but with a little persistence you shouldn't have too much trouble finding an Eri of your own. This B/B one set me back 3800 yen from AmiAmi preowned, and I'm guessing 3500-4000 yen ought to do the trick if you're hunting this figure. Keep in mind that that large base might make her a little pricier to ship than the usual 1/8 scale figure, though.
THANKS FOR READING!

If you liked this review, here are some of my other reviews you might also find interesting. Lots of blonde beach figures and older Alter figures!

Maakie (3年前) #2932194Oh in the past I was a pretty big fan, never saw the anime, but collected the manga. :) I guess my interest just faded over the years. I re-read the manga about 2-3 years ago, but it didn't grab me as much as it would before. Still, I had a lot of fun with the series in the past, so there are good memories. :)
And I'm interested in that review, as I don't know much about figures from Q-six! :) (I can be a bit slow with reading/responding as you probably have noticed from my activity here.)

That was the first Q-six figure I've bought, and she has her share of both good and bad features. I'll probably post a review in the next couple of weeks so please look forward to it :).

victorviper (3年前) #2923590Not a fan of School Rumble? My interest in the show has varied greatly over the years, but Eri is a pretty neat character.
She'd look pretty weird standing. But speaking of poles, ITEM #211167 is in the review queue... :)

secretly-otaku (3年前) #2925230To think how much has Alter improved in all these years... anyway, thank you for another nice review, Vic. It is truly a shame that there are not many figures of School Rumble. But who knows? Maybe we will get some on their 20th anniversary like Card Captor Sakura or Uthena did :p. Alter could re-issue this one to make justice to Eri-chan (AKA best rumble girl xD).

Well, I don't get the impression that School Rumble has had quite the same staying power as CCS or Utena, so I'm not exactly holding my breath for more figures of any of the cast members. But you are correct, Eri is definitely the best girl from the cast :).

Maakie (3年前) #2922940When I saw the picture from her in the box, I was expecting her to be an upright figure with a pole in her foot. :P
The posing is very original, but unfortunately this figure doesn't really intrigue me. Still a nice review, Victor! :)

Chloe-tsundere The louise otaku
victorviper (3年前) #2899824Well, in PICTURE #1263890 , I can almost imagine her saying "what are you looking at"? In that shot, her expression looks mildly annoyed with a little hint of a smile at the same time. Tsundere enough for me, I guess :).
I never really know what to write about when it comes to loot posts, which is why I only do them every now and then (like when some highly-anticipated item arrives)...

Hmm true that angle it looks kinda tsun =P but usually when shes like that she has a lil blush xD tho i doubt that wouldve looked great on a figure =P it would be like mio isurig from griffon since thats the way her blushes were portrayed in the serie

Chloe-tsundere The louise otaku
victorviper (3年前) #2899137That's a pretty funny coincidence. She has a lot of flaws to be sure, but they don't really bother me all that much. Maybe it's because the figure so perfectly captures the tsundere aspect of her personality!

Uhm tbh i dont see the tsundere aspect here shes smiling all over and not blushing nor is she tsun here.. Shes just enjoying the beach =P but care to enlighten me on how you find her tsundere here? I know she is one btw :) but whenever shes having a dere moment shes blushing a bit or is embarassed at least View spoilerHide spoiler like with the eavesdroping scene xD or when harima is misunderstood as usual and hilarious moments happen.like where harima holds her as he lost his trunks and afterwards shes tsun over it..

Hmm yeah well maybe i will get her, shes just not high on my priority list atm :) but shes in my maybe later list :3 and she will look nice with my other tsundere girls
