Insurance feels like a scam

VeroxionVeroxion2ヶ月前Diary
I've only ever had one figure arrive to me broken, but dealing with my country's postal service was a nightmare.

A figure arrived to me broken - her leg was wobbly when I was trying to place her into her stand, so I stopped and checked to see that it was on the verge of breaking... which it did. It was so loose it just snapped clean off.

Well, this figure just so happened to be insured for up to 10000JPY. Keep in mind this was only a 2500JPY item so it wasn't too expensive, but still... insurance is insurance. So I first contacted the store about this problem, and they swore that they wouldn't send an item out in that condition. They advised me to contact my post office since I was insured.

So I did... and oh boy. They dicked me around for about 2 weeks. I have no idea what the protocol is in other countries, but I had to pack up the figure and send it to them in the original packaging so they could "access the damage". Apparently clear photos were not enough.

Well, unsurprisingly they claimed that "it wasn't their fault" and promptly told me there was nothing they could do.

After that ordeal, insuring figures just seemed like a scam to me. The post office isn't going to pay out if something arrives to you broken. They'll just claim it wasn't damaged via shipping and bam, problem solved.

Since that incident which was about 1.5 years ago, I haven't had another figure arrive to me broken... until now.

ITEM #527787 just came home to me with a broken ankle. Now this figure is 8k and I had to pay like 5k for shipping because of the damn box size, so a considerable amount was spent and I'd very much like to be compensated for his busted leg.

So... here I go again. I have a feeling that the exact same thing will happen where they resolve themselves of all responsibility and refuse to pay, but we'll see.

Has anyone else had a problem with insurance? Do you think it's worth it? Have you actually been reimbursed by the postal company if your items are damaged/broken? Share your horror stories with me so I can maybe feel a little better. :'D

Veroxion (1ヶ月前) #27230463Yup, same here. I personally don't mind if he just leaves it out by the door. At least I'll get my package. Our old post man wouldn't even knock and say he attempted to deliver it... or once, he did knock and I got to the door in about 3-5 secs and he was already getting back into his van lol. >_>

Earlier I was at a point where my mailman didn't even take the package out of his van, unless he saw that I opened the door. He then would rush back to find it in the van. xD Nowadays he has completely given up even on that. :') Although it would be safer if he would just deliver all the packages at my post office, this has also made me a bit lazy about receiving them at home, so I'm not complaining. xD

Maakie (1ヶ月前) #27223702It might sound a bit harsh, but what you describe is the reason I go for unreg SAL (or otherwise cheap/untracked shipping methods) whenever possible. Insurances are a joke. The shop will point to the shipping service and the shipping service will either point to the shop or you. The chance you actually ever see your money back is extremely slim.
The few times I got partially damaged figures/items I just shrug it off and told myself to live with it, because at least I saved a lot of money on shipment. >.< Good luck with your new case!!
Lol, my mailman has gotten to the point of just leaving it leaning against my front door or trying to cram it in the mailbox if it fits (even if it's a package where I should sign for). I did not hear about this 'new' AmiAmi rule, but one more reason to always go for unreg. :')

This isn't harsh at all! I always go for UREG SAL as well because I've never had any problems with it! These items exceeded their spending limit... or size limit lol. I'm frugal and I'll save what money I can. :P

Veroxion (1ヶ月前) #27118988Maybe it's different in Japan, but my mailman sure as hell isn't waiting around for me to open my parcels. If I asked he'd probably say 'I have work to do' and leave lol. He sometimes doesn't even bother to knock and just leaves a 'card to call' saying no one is home.
It's unreasonable to expect us to do this with every parcel we receive, though I can understand why AmiAmi would post this if they get so many reports of damaged goods.

darkrose (2ヶ月前) #27089328I personally had 3 success stories for cold cast statues that arrived damaged.
I have more problems with the sender refusing to submit claim (since the post office will reimburse the sender) or sender that tries to make profit from the unfortunate situation of damaged item ("Pls hold on to the item until the claim is successful but I am not going to refund you yet" but once the claim is approved "Pls ship back the item to me and then I will refund you")

Yeah, AmiAmi asked me to submit the claim, but my country only allows the sender to submit it. So I've told AmiAmi that they have to and even provided my post office's reply. We'll see how that goes I guess.

KiruKiru (1ヶ月前) #27102271so i read this yesterday on mfc but today noticed this in my amiami shipping email:
"IMPORTANT: Please inspect the contents of your package upon its delivery in front of the mailman.
Please be advised that some postal services do not accept a damage claim if the contents of the package are not inspected in front of the mailman upon the delivery of your order.
*specifically, customers from China, Poland, Thailand, Russia, Spain and Mexico should always check the contents of their package in front of the postman before accepting it."

Update: After telling AmiAmi that the damage was most likely not due to shipping and providing pictures of the pristine box and figure box... they said something along the lines of "such figures are fairly delicate getting dropped or bumped may not have done anything to the box but it could damage the figure". >__>

They are pretty much indirectly refusing to accept that it could have just been a defect figure. Welp.

Mekuneko (2ヶ月前) #27064989I think in these cases it's always important to exaggerate a little. Like instead of saying there is just a little damage to the leg you'll most likely get a better response if you say that there is remarkable damage to the leg that prevents displaying the figure properly.
It's sadly true that it depends a lot on the employee who's looking at your case, but I think they also have to be strict – the system most likely wouldn't sustainable if they gave refunds to everybody.

I see what you mean. At this rate, because one leg is broken the other is supporting all of the weight and seems to be on the verge of breaking as well. So yeah, soon enough it literally won't be able to be displayed. >__<

KalasRaven (2ヶ月前) #27057520I've had figures arrive to me broken at a seam... one of my Yu-Gi-Oh figures came with his duel disk snapped off, another figure was broken on it's ankle, and another figure's arm came off right out of the packaging. It's not the best thing to receive an item like that, but it's not the worst. A little bit of glue and it's like nothing ever happened to it. It's not worth the headache of shipping the figure back or making a big fuss, imo. If a figure had tons of scratches, blemishes, or was cracked in a place that isn't easily repaired, then yeah, understandable. But most pvc figures are held together by glue and they are mass produced, so if a a little home repair is in order, it's not awful. :3
I hope you get everything sorted out.

Unfortunately because of the way the leg is broken, the figure is now only supported by one leg and it looks like that is close to breaking as well. So we'll see if super glue can hold it together properly. :(

sanzo_reload (2ヶ月前) #27058097I have been buying figures for a little over 2 years and it only happened to me once for this Natsume Yuujinchou figure, which has been known to have the trunk snapped off the base. Since I was already expecting this issue to happen and thanks to the clear packaging of the figure, I can see even without opening the box that the trunk was already detached from the base.
I contacted Mandarake and they requested me to file damage claim report with my local post office. So I brought the unopened figure (with the original packaging and all) to my local post office and I opened it in front of them with them video recording the whole process. Fast forward two months later, I actually got 6,000 yen indemnity (which is the max insurance coverage for SAL) + SAL registered postage cost from Japan Post. It actually surprised me that I even got anything back from Japan Post. I think the key of getting anything from insurance depends highly on your local post office and their staff willingness to help you out. I really hope that you manage to claim the insurance for your figure.

Wow, that sucks but at least you were able to recoup some of your loss. I think it definitely does depend on whoever you get as a representative, unfortunately.
