Opinions on collecting figures for aesthetics over series?Opinions on collecting figures for aesthetics over series?

So I'd consider myself a bit of a pastel nut, and of course, there's a ton of figures out there that have that cute fluffy color aesthetic going on. I'm interested in adding those types of figures to my collection but A; I've never seen the series before or B; I'm not interested in the series but like the look of the characters.

Is this something that would be frowned upon? If I were to buy wands from magical girl animes too but not have much interest in actually sitting down and watching the shows is that a big no-no? I'm dying for some more pastel pinks and blues and other colors to be thrown into my collection but they're all outside of my interests.

Let me know what you think about this situation!

Thanks!

Honestly, worrying about what complete strangers on the internet think of what you spend your money on is not worth even thinking about. It shouldn't factor into how you choose what you want. Life is far too short to worry about the opinions of others who have no influence over your life. You buy what makes you happy :)

The "I only get it if I've seen/played/read it" rule is definitely for the benefit of the individual, not a standard rule for collecting. So many people collect purely for aesthetics! But some of us like to limit ourselves because our wallets can't handle buying every intriguing figure that's released, so we only stick to what we know. That and you'll find a portion of us collect certain characters because we like their personality, etc., so buying a random figure of a cute guy/girl/robot doesn't bring us as much joy as our waifus/husbandos favorite characters.

As for "gatekeeping", don't let it bother you. I've never heard of it being an issue in figure collecting compared to, say, cosplaying. You are definitely allowed to spend your money on what you want regardless of whether you enjoy a series or not. :)

♥♥Some of my figures I bought mainly for the pastel aesthetic look and never really watched the show. I know a lot of other collectors who do the same. If you want to collect figures for an aesthetic purpose I say go for it. It's your collection and it's not really doing any harm.♥♥

I've done this on occasion as well, but personally, for me, the collection has more meaning when the content is something you are familiar with and has some sort of context.

For example, If I had a fork and spoon in my display it'd be silly, but if it was a fork and spoon in a Steins;Gate display it'd make more sense because of the context of the item which would be lost to people who are not familiar with the series.

Ultimately, the collection is yours so you can do with it what you will and it won't matter to anyone else. If you want pastels and rainbows go for it~! No one can stop you, and no one should.

Why not? It's nobody's business but yours. If you want a collection to be aesthetically pleasing but know nothing about the show/character that's your choice.

Personally, I don't buy unless I at least watch an episode or two but even I've become more lenient on that. I pre-ordered my first female figure because she ITEM #464791 is just that stunning to me. I'm in love with the design and I have zero plans to play the game.

I actually bought my first Erio figure based on her look before I saw the series. After that I did watch the anime and ended up loving it and purchasing more figures of her. It's a toss up I want to buy for aesthetics and for characters I love. It all depends on what makes you happy and your wallet not cry hopefully :p

Enjoy!

I usually buy figures from series that haven't seen yet, and when they arrive i sit down and watch the show to get involved into the story and make good photos of scenes and situations that the character's fan woill recognize

Most of my collection are from series, shows, manga, or games I've never seen, played, read or even heard of in some cases. I buy what I like.

To be honest, I see figures as a piece of artwork so I buy them as such. I do collect character I am personally attached to but a very great deal of my collection is there out of artistic taste.

From what I've experienced a lot of people have looked down upon my way of collecting and asking me why I own figures of characters I don't even know. I just ignore such comments though, and I think you should too because it's your money and it's up to you how you spend it.

Personally, I collect figures only of characters I know and love. Even if the character came from a subpar or hated anime, as long as I have a personal attachment to them, I will buy figures of them. Though since I am a nendo collector I personally only buy nendos, and scales for charas I am more attached to.

I've recently ventured into buying for aesthetics though, but only with 2 figures in my ordered (ITEM #639324 and ITEM #611619). I find that for me personally, my aesthetic tastes change way too often, so if I have no personal attachment to the character, I will very quickly get tired of looking at the figure. I've already canceled 1 figure and given away PO for another I pre-ordered for aesthetic reasons, so I vowed myself never to do that again. That's why I have a "watch source material" list, because I intend to watch the anime first before I decide if I actually want to buy the figure. However, if I really have no intention of watching the source material simply because the anime/manga isn't the type to appeal to me (like for example, if it's from an ecchi, romance, mecha, or harem type of anime, amongst others), then I will just put it in my "aesthetics" list and mull over whether I still want to get the figure or not after I've gotten everything I wanted in my actual wishlist.

But of course, I know lots of people who collect for aesthetic reasons, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! You collect what you want to collect and set your own personal rules and boundaries! Strangers on the internet have no right whatsoever to decide what is "appropriate" to collect. If you feel happy about the stuff in your collection, then that is all that matters. :D

I concur. Just get what you like. Heck, I've been in a situation where I DIDN't like the anime, but pursued a character I liked from it.
