Fate/EXTRA - Saber EXTRA - 1/7 - Type-Moon Racing ver.(Stronger)Fate/EXTRA - Saber EXTRA - 1/7 - Type-Moon Racing ver.(Stronger)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review! :3

This post will be picture-heavy (more of the usual...)
and mildly NSFW, because of the revealing outfit (you have been warned)

Finally... finally... after months of waiting I can complete my Type-Moon Racing set and that much I can reveal, whatever I might criticize I sure am glad I did!
But let's do this in order...
Today I'll be having a look at Stronger's Racing ver. of Saber EXTRA (aka Nero Claudius or the emperor of roses if you will). After preordering two thirds of this racing set (also reviewed Artoria BLOG #39334 and Rin BLOG #40362 in case you're interested) there wasn't really a way for me to pass her up, even if I wasn't fond of her as a character (which changed in the meantime) and the figure itself from the get-go. Having seen her in person now that impression redeemed itself quite a bit and instead of blabbing on I'll start getting into the 'why' now.

As always the first thing to look at is the box. Same as the others, this one is made of thinner cardboard. The box has a big window in the front and smaller ones on the sides and the top. Again they're hemmed by diagonal cut-outs enforcing the racing theme of the set and pictures of the figures from different angles (those can be found on all sides, excluding the bottom). The box is colored in a very shiny black (so shiny in fact that I had to delete the picture of the bottom, because it reflected me quite clearly) with red stripes, fitting Nero's outfit. The other ones of the set are white however (albeit with a similar design). This would ofc make sense to dome degree if she was the center-piece of the set, but I don't feel like that's actually the case here (the pose should be more bodacious then). Making it somewhat inconsistent..
But I like the design anyway.

The blister as in most cases is nothing special, but serves it's purpose.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968579.jpeg
The figure comes in 5 parts this time: base, figure, sword/sign + handle and the exchangeable (holding) arm.

The base is the last missing piece of the Type-Moon racing logo (which awfully reminds me of a certain servant's lancer version).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968802.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968586.jpeg
Again this one is painted in gold and black and includes a clear plastic wedge held in place by a metal rod/peg. Additionally the base has a small immersion (similar to ITEM #287683), where the sword/sign post with the starting number is supposed to get inserted. Depending on the display angle it proves sometimes more and sometimes less effective.

Time for the first overview...
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968593.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968611.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968617.jpeg
Now the pose and facial expression seem to ooze confidence (though my best friend remarked that the long stride looks a bit chavvy as well). She's sexy and she knows it. The jacket and hair makes the whole thing also seem very dynamic.

I really wasn't fond of Nero's side-wards glance at first, but seeing her in person that really changed (to be fair, the promo pictures do a really bad job of showcasing it). In the end I love her expression, that confident and knowing smile and those green eyes... At this point I don't even care if it fits her or not, she is just damn beautiful.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968622.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968627.jpeg
It's positively surprising that the side-wards glance is far from being restrictive (as I initially thought), instead it looks good from quite a few angles.

Her hair looks fairly good, albeit not perfect. The small nitpicks I have are the shading on her fringe, while not necessarily overdone it could be better since the gradient isn't as fluent as I feel it should be, and the stray strand in the front where the seams are a tad too visible. Apart from that both shading and sculpting look pretty on-point and the sense of windi~ness gets conveyed in a nice way.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968632.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968643.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968637.jpeg
I have nothing to complain about the shiny red hair-bow, since it fits the overall impression.

Just as Artoria and Rin, Nero is wearing a lacquer/faux-leather collar, which really sets itself apart from her light skin.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968648.jpeg
I also like the sculpting of her collarbone.

Going further down we 'arrive' at her red and black top. Paint and sculpting (especially the folds) again look 'near' perfect, at least I found nothing to complain about
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968655.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968660.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968665.jpeg
While the 'fabric' seems really thick and the bustier padded to some degree, it's obvious that she fills it way better than the other race-queens. Maybe that's why she has the racing logo on the top itself instead of one of her sleeves (like Rin and Saber), after all she does have a lot more to 'show' in that area. You can even see a bit of a side-boob, since her jacket is billowing so strongly.

Speaking of the lacquer/faux leather jacket, that one is pretty well done too. The shading is spot on and the way it creases due to the movement is great. Again the part where her exchangeable arm separates is very well 'hidden' as one of the jacket's seams and the black rims on the sleeves seem cleanly painted this time around.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968669.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968674.jpeg

Her hands look good for the most part too, I really like how the one on her hip is actually touching it instead of just floating/hovering over it.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968678.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968685.jpeg
The impression of the slender and feminine fingers gets diminished a little, because of tge naipolish looking a bit blotchy though.

As you can see Nero also has a nice belly, with ever so subtle shading emphasizing the sculpt.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968692.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968699.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968704.jpeg
Nero's back also looks pretty damn good and I'm not talking about the butt crack (yet).

Going on to her red hot pants, well, she sure looks sexy wearing them. Unfortunately the red belt loops are bleeding paint onto the white belt and vice versa, though the buckle looks neat for the most part.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968709.jpeg
Tbh I never understood the 'cleavage' showing her butt crack, it's a common element of her design and sure looks less weird than in her usual dress, but even for a flamboyant character like her it seems a bit much. It's looks hot nevertheless, albeit a bit vulgar (and it actually makes me wonder if she goes commando under those hot pants O_o).

Her legs just look gorgeous in those over-knee boots (I really developed a thing for those and racing outfits in general ever since I started collecting the set). Again the shading and modeling looks really lifelike and there's not a single flaw to be found in the shiny finish either.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968716.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968726.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968738.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968743.jpeg
Contrary to Artoria and Rin, Nero's zipper's and toe caps are gold instead of silver (probably to do the emperor justice). The paint on the toe cap is slightly uneven though.

Well, now let's attach the other arm, designed to hold the sign post showing the racing number, which looks very similar to a certain sword named „Aestus Estus“.
Attaching everything is pretty self-explanatory, but there's still an instruction sheet.

No complaints here either, paint and sculpt seem pretty much flawless (but black parts are always horrible dust magnets).

Now on to completing the set...
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968813.jpeg
I've stated this before in Rin's review, but I really don't like that the bases can't be connected permanently (I would've preferred clasps or something similar, just like what GSC did for ITEM #464666 and ITEM #549408).

So where do I start? For one I think that red is a bit too dominant here, I mean it obviously fits Rin and Nero and makes sense, but it's too much imo (maybe making more parts of the outfits black would've been a good choice and a nice contrast to Saber's white jacket)
I do still think the set looks good overall, if you find a display angle you like that is. Alas you can't help noticing that it's cramped and while all figures can be rotated on their pegs, there's a limit reached when they start getting in each others way.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968818.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968828.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968837.jpeg
This is actually my favorite angle since you can see all of these beauties faces and the logo isn't aligned in a kind of 'too skewed' position (pity that Artoria fades a bit from the spotlight though).
Actually... I wonder why they went with this for the promo pic.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Agon1501294628.jpeg
The angle seems weird, since you can see the faces only sideways (esp Rin's).

Size comparisons might seem a bit moot seeing how Nero is part of a set, but it's become a dear habit now, so I'll do it anyway.^^
Soooo, Nero is a 1/7 scale reaching about 22,5cm (excluding base and ahoge), her height (taken from the FGO wiki) should be around 150cm, making the figure actually too big. Seeing how she's wearing high-heeled boots and has a pretty straight pose despite the striding position it seems about right though (or at least not like a bad discrepancy).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968844.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968849.jpeg
Next to 1/8 scales there's no mistaking that she is the bigger one, both in terms of (body) height and overall proportions (it's only due to the veil and LE base that ITEM #518908 beats her in height).

Even a small~ish 1/7 scale like ITEM #549541 looks a bit out of place next to her.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968855.jpeg

Regular sized 1/7 figures are really the way to go if you don't want to keep some consistency in terms of scale, with ITEM #414719 and ITEM #604756 (don't let the base fool you) being good examples of that.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968859.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968868.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1532968872.jpeg
A big 1/7 like ITEM #287579 (boy, I sure use her a lot for these comparisons...), will still dwarf her though (I don't think it's that bad in this case, but something to keep in mind).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conclusion
Well what can I say... this figure is stunning, same as the other 2. I really only had minuscule things to complain and as far as craftsmanship goes she's near perfect. If this is an accurate depiction of her character I can't really say, though I feel she should be a bit more flashy than this. Still she looks really confident and hot, something I totally dig.
As part of the set (which won't exactly influence my rating, but I want to mention it anyway) she is a bit lacking imo. Her long stride is effectively blocking the rotation of Saber and particularly Rin, making the whole thing less versatile in terms of display-angles, which can also largely be attributed to the base. It might just be too small to hold 3 figures (especially considering those poses). On that front I think this is badly thought out, though once you find an angle you like it still looks quite good.
PS: ITEM #498420 is getting re-released and is already up for preorder on amiami (there might also be a chance for Rin and Nero to get re-released), so just in case you missed her the first time around now is your second chance. :3
That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
Since I strive to improve my reviews and writing
I'd be really happy about some constructive criticism. :3
Of course any thoughts on the figure are very welcome too!^^
Shuuru (9ヶ月前) #41346825Amazing review and pictures! She looks gorgeous but I would have prefered if her eyes were more like in Fate/EXTRA, with its design it just looks like Artoria in a red outfit, not Nero-like at all. Still, the three of them together are fantastic. Thank you!
Thank you! :3 I don't really have a strong opinion about the eyes, but you're right in saying that they both look too similar face-wise. Now that I compare this one's face to say ITEM #287579 I think they could at least have added some painted eyelashes. :/
OceanRoost (11ヶ月前) #38237053I loved the pictures in your review! I went to look at the official promo pictures and found them extremely lackluster and the colors in the figure seemed washed out in them. I wish they had used a white background like you did it really showcased how amazing the red looked on this figure!Thank you! :3
Yeah, I wonder why they went for the dark one, most promo pictures have white or at least very lighter backgrounds (for a reason). But some (like the first one) look like they have some weird effectg applied to them as well (looks like some sort of veil). Well, I noticed that a black or dark background does weird things to the overall look of the picture, which makes me only use the white one for reviews now (though it's pretty boring too, but there were only 4 included with my picture-tent).^^"
Helsing (11ヶ月前) #38214007IMO the ribbon should not have been shiny , you can understand the rest of the stuff cause it can be shiny leather but somehow not the ribbon.Well, Artoria's ribbon is shiny as well, I think they wanted to keep at least some sort of consistency with this set.
Mobiletortoise (11ヶ月前) #38205482Very well done review, I was able to get lucky on the AmiAmi restocks so I'm looking forward to her even more now!
Thank you, glad you like it. :3
Those amiami restocks are really neat (though I partly think it's the lefover stock from people not paying their invoices), albeit never-wracking because they can sell out so fast (I only stalked them once for ITEM #455088 and it's not an experience I want to repeat).^^
Gandalf (11ヶ月前) #38199686Probably 1-2 weeks to reach me here in the UK, with a likely customs bill.
Rin and Nero both look stunning solo, such that I'd maybe even now say that Nero is fine as all pretty much all red. I think I'd balance it out by making Rin's leggings black, it'd remove a big bit of red from the trio and also mirror her red top/black skirt/stockings appearance from Fate Stay Night.
Ah not long then, mine came with a bill attached as well (though it was 'just' VAT).
That'd have been nice as well and maybe with the stripe on Neri's bustier being white instead of white there'd be overall consistency (and Artoria wouldn't be as isolated with her color-scheme).
When do you expect your Nero?
Well, it does make sense that both their outfits are mostly red, but the balancing isn't that good as you said. I think they could've included either a bit more white or black (or both), White for Nero since her normal outfit has white elements and there's also her bride version and a bit more black for Rin (maybe the jacket in black and the middle stripe of her bustier in black and the ones on the side in red). Not that these thoughts could change anything, but it's kind of fun imagining.^^
