September Loot-All about the old school!September Loot-All about the old school!

victorvipervictorviper1ヶ月前Loot
Last month, I had three figures preordered, and all three got delayed. Two got pushed to September, and both of those got delayed again. So, I went hunting for some items on my wishlist and some small goods which seemed likely to disappear before too long.

Almost all the items in this month's loot feature old-school characters and series, so it'll also be a walk down anime memory lane. A few of the items have some NSFW features, so be aware of that.

Collecting an item from Amazon and an AmiAmi box, we've got the following pile of loot.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538009827.jpeg

First up from Amazon is a relatively new prize figure of my favorite character, ITEM #672703. Jungle Hobby had a few of these Asukas for about 1700 yen, but shipping her by herself would probably add another 3000 yen on top of that, so when I found one on Amazon for $30 with free shipping, I figured that was a pretty good deal.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1537033492.jpeg

It had been a while since I picked up a new Asuka figure, but this one caught my eye because of her pose and the large Lance of Longinus accessory.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1537033501.jpeg

One of the most interesting elements of this figure is the design of Asuka's face. The character designs of the Evangelion anime and manga, particularly the faces, tend to have fairly sharp lines and angular features. However, this particular Asuka gives her a softer and a more moefied look, which is kind of an interesting change of pace.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1537033513.jpeg

This particular prize is of really good quality, so if you're an Asuka fan, I'd highly recommend it, particularly considering how cheaply it can be found.

Next, since both of my September figures (Rocket Boy's Kurone ITEM #464770 and Amakuni's Lilith ITEM #582603) got delayed a second time, I decided to pick up a couple of figures and some small items that were languishing in AmiAmi's preowned and sale sections.

AmiAmi's September postcard features mahou shoujo Amico.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538009951.jpeg

The item that spurred my AmiAmi order was a t-shirt ITEM #667019 of the irrepressible virtual YouTuber Ai Kizuna. I thought this shirt was long sold out, but to my surprise it was listed in stock, so I figured I had better grab it. Then, since I had an order going, I figured why not see what other items they might have from my wishlist.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538009919.jpeg

A lot of my anime t-shirts are getting old and kind of ratty, so I'm gradually building a new wardrobe :). Plus, I like to wear anime shirts out and about from time to time, as every now and then you'll find a kindred spirit who obviously recognizes a shirt's source and will say something. A.I. Channel is however relatively obscure even by anime standards, so I'm interested to see if anyone out in the wild will recognize Ai :).

I promised this loot would have old-school characters, and I guess the next item qualifies, as although this makes me feel old, the source anime Angel Beats! ENTRY #8 is almost a decade old. We've got a play mat ITEM #761586 of my favorite character from that anime, the one and only Yui ENTRY #23147.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010029.jpeg

Oddly, Yui didn't get many figures but she does have a fair amount of merchandise, and this particular item had been languishing for months in AmiAmi's sale section. I like the artwork, and figuring this item would eventually disappear and become hard to find, I decided that I might as well get it while I had an order going. Plus, I've always liked Yui's annoying yet cute and charming personality, and I definitely get that vibe from this particular illustration of the character.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010031.jpeg

The mat is fairly large (55 by 40 cm), so my plan is to gently iron out the wrinkles and then display it as a tapestry.

Next up is possibly the most obscure item in this month's loot, and a figure I'd been eyeing in AmiAmi's preowned section, Max Factory's Wendy Garret ITEM #418.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010141.jpeg

Wendy hails from the Gun X Sword ENTRY #173 anime circa 2004-05, and while overall the anime itself didn't make a huge lasting impression on me, I did come to like Wendy. She's cute and plucky, and she's actually quite a tough and resilient young lady, much more so than you might expect at first glance.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010145.jpeg

In addition to her personality, I also like Wendy's character design, with her huge braids and green eyes.

Gun X Sword has its moments of fanservice, but it is by no means an ecchi anime, and surprisingly Max Factory gives Wendy a castoff feature (you may have noticed the "POLO system" text on the box). Her camisole top is made of a rubber material allowing it to stretch enough to be removed. While I won't be displaying Wendy in her castoff state, I felt compelled to give the castoff a try and surprisingly, the rubber material was still quite stretchy and showed no signs of drying out or becoming brittle despite the fact that the figure is a decade old. Just in case you're wondering, her chest is not very detailed, and so this is by no means an 18+ figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010150.jpeg

Max Factory briefly experimented with making castoff figures in 2007-08 (in addition to Wendy, other figures in the POLO line included ITEM #274 and ITEM #49), and right around that time, Native was being born as one of GSC's many subsidiaries. My hypothesis is that the POLO line was GSC's way of beta-testing various castoff techniques before starting up Native's production. Anyone here want to confirm or deny that speculation?

There's been quite bit written on MFC lately about the apparent demise of Griffon Enterprises ENTRY #7626 (see for example BLOG #40500), and the next figure in this loot is an old Griffon offering that I'd been watching, ITEM #94262.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010224.jpeg

Apparently the figure is based on some cover art from one of the Ikki Tousen DVD's. I scanned my DVD's to see if maybe this art was lurking somewhere on my DVD shelf, but apparently this particular artwork didn't get used on any of the North American releases.

Ryomou is a rather complicated character; she's usually quite stoic and reserved, but every now and then she shows (like most of the Ikki Tousen cast) something of a hypersexual personality, and this figure captures a little bit of both sides.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010231.jpeg

The figure also shows various traits of "Griffon being Griffon"; there's Griffon's trademarked plain black base with a nameplate, there's a couple very noticeable flaws, and Ryomou is nowhere near her listed 1/7 scale (she's more like 1/8, and a small 1/8 at that), but all the same this is kind of an interesting take on the character.

I suppose every collector has at least one of those figures that goes on and off their wishlist a dozen times until finally the realization occurs that it is in fact a highly-wished item. The last item in this loot is one of those figures for me, Max Factory's Tamaki Kousaka ITEM #13587.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010317.jpeg

Like I said, I'd been back and forth about this figure a hundred times, but eventually I decided that I did in fact really want this figure, and AmiAmi had a B/B one for only 4700 yen, so I figured that price was too good to pass up.

In retrospect, I should have gotten this one a long time ago, as Tama-nee is so pretty! In particular her amber/brown eyes are lovely, and her facial expression is perfect; it looks like she's so happy to see you! While this is kind of a sexy figure to be sure, it definitely doesn't cross that line into lewdness, so there's that perfect balance of pretty+sexy. Throw her huge 1/6 scale into the mix, and Max Factory made a really great figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010321.jpeg

This hadn't really dawned on me until I was unboxing Tamaki, but she also perfectly complements another old-school figure I'd picked up a few months ago, Kurushima's Hakufu Sonsaku ITEM #11438. The poses, their expressions, and the handbra theme of both figures makes them go together so well. It's always nice when things like that happen!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010327.jpeg

I've bought many B/B figures from AmiAmi over the years, and almost all of them have been like new, but Tamaki did have a little paint chip in her hair. At first, I thought it was just some white paint transferred from somehwere, but upon closer inspection it is a chip. I'm not too worried about it, however, as you don't really see it from most angles and Tamaki's price was definitely right.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1538010325.jpeg

So, that's it for September's loot, and as always...

Its been a long time due, will have to get Tamaki soon. It would be great if you could write a review about this Tamaki figure. Would be super useful to me.

jesmagicchild (1ヶ月前) #41052969I second on wanting to see you do a review for Tamaki.
She's a figure I've been somewhat interested in purchasing, but just haven't bitten yet.

Just posted a review of Tamaki BLOG #41242. Please check it out!

sailormatlac (1ヶ月前) #41404109I went hook, line and sinker it seems! ;-) Quite hard to resist!
The biggest problem with Griffon was consistency from one figure to another. They often came up with quite interesting designs and didn't shy doing some really old school stuff. I was a happy camper when they came back for a short while last year. The new batch was far better.
The 1/2.5 line was indeed very promising with each figure being better than the previous one. It's a shame it came so late in their corporate history, maybe it could have helped them a little bit. I consider ITEM #190392 to be some kind of Griffon's swan song.

Griffon's Nowa ITEM #5711 and Etna ITEM #153 might actually be the best figures of those characters, so Griffon could certainly make good figures; I think over time they just couldn't escape some of their not-so-good offerings.

I was hopeful they'd make a comeback, but I was not too optimistic when I saw all their new announcements were original characters, as that sort of signaled they were they were trying to get back into the business on the cheap without spending anything on licensing arrangements.

Maybe they would have been better off just specializing to their super figure line. They probably could have made some money re-releasing that Kirino 1/2.5 figure and I would have liked to see ITEM #190393 see the light of day. Maybe releasing fewer figures could have kept their QC in line, too. Alas, I guess we'll never know...

victorviper (1ヶ月前) #41396403I hoped you'd comment on the Tamaki-Hakufu pairing :).
"Soft" - that's quite a good way to describe that Tamaki figure.

sailormatlac (1ヶ月前) #41344172Tame-nee and Hakufu... a combo made in heaven. Glad to see you decided to get this lovely To Heart 2 figure. I've been eyeing her for years but never dared to hit the order button. As you said, this is a perfectly balanced figure that gives that kind of cute and charming level of fan service. Also, the curves on this figure are extremely well done. The word "soft" comes to my mind.
Griffon... I surprised myself last week to have a surge of nostalgia for them. Then I came to my senses! ;-)

I must have been feeling nostalgic about Griffon. In fairness, not all of their figures were bad; they made some bad ones to be sure, but they also made some decent ones, and their 1/2.5 scale "super figures" by all accounts seem to be pretty good.

For the price, that Asuka figure can't be beat.

Wendy is quite cute, and I'd sort of vaguely had my eye on that figure for years. She was languishing in AmiAmi's preowned section and needed a good home :).
