A piece so special that I forget I actually own itA piece so special that I forget I actually own itDiary

Production cels are awesome.
It's quite literally owning a piece of an anime and animation history.

I own several cels, most of which are proudly displayed in my room, like this beautiful cel of DIO from the 1993 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA, which stands as a crown of my DIO shrine;
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/12/21/2587920.jpeg

So cels are pretty special. Each of them is completely unique, carefully painted by the hard working and talented animators... who's names we don't know.

When recalling names of people involved in the production of an anime, we usually recall directors, and possibly some key animators (NOTE: did you know that none other than Satoshi Kon was the animation director for the second-to-last episode of the JoJo OVA?)

I truly love the JoJo OVA, namely the 1993/4 part.
The animation is absolutely gorgeous, and the nostalgic feeling of old cel animation is notable all over it. The project was made for fans, by fans, and did its best to capture the core of JoJo in the limited runtime of an OVA.

There is another thing makes it stand out among other JoJo media; the style.
I'll be the very last person to say anything against Araki's own style, it was a huge influence on me as an artist and I practically worship the man's creative vision.

However I am also VERY fond of the style of Junichi Hayama, the man who single-handedly formed the entire aesthetic of the JoJo OVA, and who's design of DIO paired with Andrew Chaikin's dub voice was what sealed my fate and turned me into a DIO stan.

I am a huge fan of Araki's sketches.
If you are a JoJo fan, you've likely seen many of them.
https://i.ibb.co/5FVBqKq/1.png

It would take too long to explain why these sketches are an incredible display of Araki's talent, but to keep it short; Every line on these quick drawings has a purpose. It keeps the balance of shapes and black and white, the implication of form, it's a boldly realized vision of a professional who disregards realism in favour of creating striking art, and embracing the lines that went wrong.

One needs years upon years of experiences to be able to break art down to its bare essentials, and that's clearly displayed in Araki's sketches.

A raw, wild sketch like this tends to hold much more artistic impact than a fully formed, detailed sketch style of someone like Horikoshi of My Hero Academia;
https://i.redd.it/3ekht46z89l41.jpg

It's worth noting that I mean absolutely no offense or shade to Horikoshi as an artist, that's not my intent with bringing him up here at all, his work in MHA is absolutely insane. The distinction I'm referring to is, that his sketches are really just more of what he does in the manga. They don't truly hold up on their own as art pieces if they were entirely detached from MHA, unlike Araki's sketches, which distinctly put the artistic aspect first.

I bring all this up, because Junichi Hayama is also incredibly talented in this aspect.
Taking a brief stroll through the 'Personal Art' section of his Gallery on JoJoWiki makes that abundantly clear.
https://i.ibb.co/nBYv774/2.png

His inkbrush work is amazing, sometimes completely leaving out lines altogether, using the power of implication to fool the eye into perceiving it as a fully formed face. I'm completely in awe of not just the skill, but even more so the confidence of the artist that goes into producing a drawing like that.

If you scroll through this gallery you can see some really amazing works, some with more detail, some with less. There are several fantastic pieces of Jotaro (one of my personal favourites being the sequence of seven separate drawings of Jotaro turning)

You keep scrolling, and eventually you get to this picture
https://i.ibb.co/N7bmgZq/JHayama-Sep-4th-2015.png

It's a portrait of DIO, drawn in the implicative style I fanboyed about before.

It's also mine now. :)

I won this beautiful Hayama original at an auction a few months ago and since I have it safely put away and out of sight while I try to figure out how to display it if at all, I actively keep forgetting that I own it.

Hayama is one of my favourite artists, the promotional artworks he did for the JoJo OVA, as well as his personal pieces, are absolutely inspiring. To own an original piece by him feels so unrealistic my brain just isn't ready to accept it lmao

The sketch is drawn on the first page of Hayama's art book. Regarding the display, I'm thinking about getting the image scanned and frame the scan, while keeping the original safely stored away. I've been suggested to remove the sketch from the book and display the original, but cutting it out feels practically blasphemous.

Well, it took me a while to get to the actual point, but I felt like making an article just showing off my treasure would be a bit boring, especially since it's not something I can really review. I hope talking about art from the perspective of an artist who deeply values this kind of artwork might be an interesting read!

Peace!

AlienEmoji1日前#97944097 LUCKY... eh at the least I got a crap-ton of scholarships so I don't owe nearly as much as I could have. would have preferred free though...
Oh the Jojonium volumes are so pretty!! I'm a big collector for One Piece but there haven't been any nice compendiums released in the US yet, only collector's set boxes (I have too many of the volumes for it to make sense to buy one. also they're kinda ugly :( ) hopefully something similar to the sets they've released in Japan come over here at some point!
Ah I used to read tokyo fashion all the time! I usually go thrift shopping or look up stuff on pinterest to see what I'm interested in. Unfortunately my thighs are too big for most dresses from the 60s-70s i've been interested in wehhh...

SegaGirl50001日前#97944051thankfully despite all of slovenia's shortcomings, one good thing i can say about it is that we have no student debt, which is great because i genuinely feel that my years at art academy were more or less a total waste of time and i'd hate to pay for it lmao

my dad is a high school art history teacher, but he's in general extremely knowledgeable about art and has influenced me greatly, especially with his insight in minimalism and japanese art (he's a big lover of sumi-e paintings).

Nowadays i mostly read comics online, but i order jojonium volumes since i want a whole collection. back in college when i had a nice book store on the way home i stopped there more frequently to look at comics but i dont do that much anymore since i moved.

I'm interested in a variety of fashion as long as it captures my interest in some way or another tbh, the most important thing to me is to see good use of colour and striking shapes. Looking at my fashion inspiration folders, no brand really stands out prominently among others. I generally tend to follow new collections on Vogue, as well as stuff like tokyo fashion. Araki's designs in JJBA greatly sparked my interest in fashion tbh.

AlienEmoji1日前#97944031OHHHHHHHHH no I got you! sorry I thought because of character design you did asdfghjkl- ah you studied illustration! You mentioned a lot of concepts I learned in school too, haha. I did like my time at my college but Yeah Don't Like Student Debt but also like I'm just gonna get student debt at another school I don't want to be at yknow?? Plus even though I love animation it was super hard for me to teach myself, I definitely needed guidance (looking at my art 4 years ago vs now is always insane... I thought I was so good but everyone had the same face asdf)
My family isn't the most art oriented (the one relative I have involved in art lives in the faraway land of Canada, I can't talk much about it without revealing personal info but he's well known) and all of my art teachers in public school were... they were something so I just doodled everywhere. A lot of it was my own drive in the end but having someone who like... knew how to do art and supported me was life changing? that sounds a bit cheesy but it's true!
Oh I used to collect a lot of comics! I mostly get volumes now but I used to go out to my local store and get the single issues all the time, is it different where you live? Also what sorts of fashion are you into, are you more into haute couture/luxury kind of stuff or do you like specific styles? sorry if i'm talking a lot lol

you misunderstood a little, i haven't studied animation.
my country doesn't even offer that education lmao, but also it's not something I was ever interested in pursuing as a job (though i dabble every now and then). even when i was little i kinda came to the conclusion that with animation industry you're either american, being able/willing to move to america, or you just don't work in animation industry lmfao, especially down here in the balkans

i studied illustration, and then proceeded to develop my style and interests in the direction of comics and character/fashion design in my own time. i make a humble living as a freelance artist online & most of my knowledge comes from my own pursuits, not from any formal education bc honestly fuck formal education lmao

above all i just love art and was raised in an art-loving family.
animation definitely falls into the category of things i am very passionate about, along with comics, character design, fashion and of course illustration.
