FREEing 1/4 Mikoto MisakaFREEing 1/4 Mikoto Misaka

DISCLAIMER: Today we'll be reviewing FREEing's 1/4 Mikoto Misaka. She's donning a bunny outfit, so there may be one or two mildly NSFW shots. Proceed accordingly.

About the character: Mikoto Misaka is the main character from A Certain Scientific Railgun. She, like most of the students in Academy City, is an esper; in fact, she is one of only a handful of level 5 espers in the city. Because of her tremendous power and her ability to wield electricity and manipulate magnetic fields, she is known as "the Railgun". She possesses a strong sense of justice, and she will often act impulsively. Her best friend and roommate is Kuroko Shirai, who is a level 4 and a member of Judgment, an organization responsible for maintaining law and order in Academy City. Kuroko likes Mikoto very, very much, and thus Mikoto spends a fair amount of time fending off her lecherous advances.

Now on to the review.

Packaging----------9/10

The front of the box features a window and the name of the character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818005.jpeg

The sides feature 4 small windows.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818007.jpeg

The back of the box features several shots of the figure. The box measures approximately 16 by 9 by 9 inches (41 by 23 by 23 cm). Shipping weight for this figure alone was 2.3 kg, so depending where you are, shipping could get pricey. I think EMS shipping to the US was about 4400 yen if I recall correctly. Overall, the box is attractive, although the photos on the back panel don't really stand out on the very light pink and white background.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818009.jpeg

Here is Mikoto inside the blister packaging. Since she comes with an alternate face, FREEing wraps her face in plastic to prevent any paint transfer.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818042.jpeg

Also, there is a small insert inside the box which shows how to swap out her face if you so desire.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818080.jpeg

Base----------7/10

She doesn't technically have a base, but she does come with a small bar stool on which she sits. Before she arrived, I was thinking that it might be cool if the stool actually rotated. In fact it does (the entire seat actually will lift off), but there's no threading or anything like that to keep the seat attached. I was also thinking it might be cool to find some 1970's style sparkly red vinyl and attempt to upholster the seat with it. Maybe someone on MFC will give it a try.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818111.jpeg

One thing that I will point out is that Mikoto is meant to be positioned squarely in the middle of the seat. If you do not do so, or if you attempt to place her on a soft surface she ***will*** fall over, so be careful especially if you display her on a high shelf, or anywhere where she could easily be jostled. Overall, my only real complaint about the seat is that it could use a bit more mass or it could be a little wider at the bottom for extra stability.

Posing----------9/10

Her pose is pretty simple, yet there are some nice subtle touches. You can tell that she's putting some of her weight on her right foot while her left leg swings free. She's using her left hand to stabilize herself a little bit, and with her other hand we see that her suit might be just a little bit snug. Overall, the pose exudes mild embarrassment, which is completely in character for Mikoto. She does have a soft spot for cute outfits, but you definitely get the impression that she's just a bit uncomfortable in that bunny suit.

Here, we have a few shots of Mikoto with her "normal" face.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818115.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818117.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818141.jpeg

I think that her "embarrassed" face is much more appropriate, so that's the one we'll be using for the rest of the review. To switch her face, first we gently pry the right side of her face.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818143.jpeg

Then, her bangs are removed and it's simply a matter of reversing the process with her other face.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818145.jpeg

Both of her faces for comparison.

Here, you can see the attachment points.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818149.jpeg

Now, we have an embarrassed Mikoto. Personally, I think this expression suits her so much better.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818187.jpeg

A close-up. Isn't she adorable?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818189.jpeg

Sculpting----------9/10
Painting-----------9/10

Overall, I am quite impressed with the overall fit and finish of the figure. Let's do a tour and inspect her in detail.

Usually, Mikoto wears a hairpin, but this time, she sports a couple of flowers in her hair. The headband helps to conceal the seam line that's usually present in this area. The transition from her bangs to the headband is also handled well; there are no obvious gaps.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818191.jpeg

Since part of her bangs detach, there's going to be some sort of a seam there. However, FREEing cleverly made the seam blend into the part in her hair. The effect is that even though you know the seam is there, it still looks pretty natural.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818193.jpeg

From above, you can see that her hair is nicely sculpted. No runs in the painting, no rough spots. Again, note how seamlessly the hairband seems to blend into her hair. It looks like it's really sitting on top of her head.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818195.jpeg

A view of her hair from the back.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818215.jpeg

Here, you can see the little folds and creases in her bow tie and the blush on her face. The blush is just enough so you notice it, but it doesn't overwhelm her face either.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818251.jpeg

I think this is the best angle from which to view her. Is it just my imagination, or does her expression change a little bit from this perspective?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818253.jpeg

A closer view of her torso. Again, you get the idea that she feels like her top is a little bit too tight-fitting.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818255.jpeg

A profile shot.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818257.jpeg

Here, you can see why Kuroko is always fawning over Mikoto's skin. Her skin looks very nice and healthy. Also, you can see that the way her left leg is positioned, there should be a little bit of slack in that garter, and the garters are not just painted on; they have some depth to them. Very nice subtle detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818259.jpeg

You can see how the white from her suit maybe extends a little too far on to the red bow. That's pretty picky, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818299.jpeg

Mikoto loves cute things, so if she's going to wear this outfit, you can imagine that she might choose stockings with that frilly top. In addition, those tops help hide any seams that might be there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818301.jpeg

Close up of the stockings.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818303.jpeg

This is the type of thing that could easily turn into a sloppy mess, but you see the painting is pretty precise, and the sculpting is pretty good.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818305.jpeg

You probably won't choose to display her viewed from this angle.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818307.jpeg

A view of her right hand. A little more definition on her fingers might have been in order. Just a bit clumpy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818352.jpeg

On her other hand, FREEing does a better job.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818354.jpeg

A small imperfection on one of her cuffs.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818356.jpeg

This is a spot where you might normally see seam lines, but I don't see any.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818358.jpeg

Since she's putting weight on this foot, you see a little crease in her shoe. A nice detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818360.jpeg

The back of her stocking.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818398.jpeg

A view from her behind her. Some of the promo shots showed a small piece of clear plastic you could sit between her backside and the seat (presumably to help keep her stable). That small accessory apparently didn't make it into the final product, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818400.jpeg

You can see a couple of small flaws in her garter. At the same time, note the way that the garter digs into her flesh just a bit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818402.jpeg

A view of the the bunny tail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818404.jpeg

Just like on their Kuroko figure, FREEing gives Mikoto a nice set of shoulder blades.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818406.jpeg

Here, you can see a little bit of glue between her shoulder and her armband, and maybe just a trace of a seam line running the length of her shoulder.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818442.jpeg

One complaint: With all that white on the figure, and that black seat, one has to be concerned about paint transfer. Below, you can see a spot where she's been in contact with the seat. I'd advise cutting a small piece of plastic to place between Mikoto and the seat.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1372818444.jpeg

Despite a few minor flaws, the overall fit and finish of the figure is excellent. I've read some criticisms of the job FREEing did on her face, but it looks like Mikoto to me.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1372818446.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9.5/10

FREEing has come through with another winner. I suppose the only problem is that once you acquire Mikoto, you'll almost certainly have to get Kuroko to go along with her!

When I got my first 1/4 figure, I was somewhat in awe of its size. Since she's seated, Mikoto measures about 14 inches (36 cm) in height, and so she fits easily on a Detolf shelf. I initially thought she might be a bit bigger than 1/4, since she's nearly as tall as Kuroko in her seated position. However, measuring her from the top of her head to be bottom of her foot reveals that her total height is about 16 inches (41 cm). At 1/4 scale, that would make her around 5'4" (164 cm). That's a little bit of a stretch, so she might in fact be closer to 1/3.9.

Let's finish the review by putting her scale in perspective, and of course I would be remiss in my reviewing duties if I did not include a shot or two of Mikoto and Kuroko together.

Together with Penguin Parade's 1/8 sister Mikoto.

The Kotobukiya Maid Mikoto is 1/6, for comparison.

Kuroko and Mikoto.

Kuroko: "Now that we have matching outfits, surely onee-sama will not be able to resist my charms"

In the four years since this figure was released, FREEing has done so many 1/4 bunny figures, but I think this one sort of stands out from the rest with the seated pose. Not to tempt you with more figures, but have you considered getting the corresponding Kuroko Shirai ITEM #135060 to go with her?

Time flies doesn't it? I was absolutely sure we discussed this figure at most two years ago. At least I'm happy to see my interest the figure was genuine enough to stand the test of time. The pose certainly helps to make her stand out of the FREEing bunnies. It's probably not unrelated to the fact they tried to really stick to the character personality which kind of downplayed the horny reference. To be noted, she's actually displayed with her polar opposite Hakufu ITEM #331607. As for Kuroko, I could be interested if I stumble upon a good opportunity.

sailormatlac (1年前) #24206954She was on my list for 4 years and I still remember every time you recommended her to me here and there on MFC threads. Got her for $80. She's absolutely gorgeous, even more than I could have expected. Thanks for giving justice to this cute bunny.

victorviper (5年前) #1589649Well, I finally decided to get a halfway decent camera to replace my 8 year old crappy 3 megapixel one (not ideal for doing photoshoots!), and where I live it's been extremely rainy, so when it's pouring down rain on a weekday evening and you can't get outside to do anything, it's figure review time. Plus, I've been experimenting with various lighting setups. I think I'm starting to get the hang of doing proper indoor lighting...

Well, megapixels aren't all, it's mainly the lens and lightning! ^^ (Not that I am a pro with camera's though! xD)

Heh, it's completely the opposite for me! :) When the sun shines, I grab out my camera since I prefer natural lightning! ^^

SailorSarah (5年前) #1589779Another great review! This figure looks really cute. Your photos make her look very appealing. I haven't watched Railgun, so I don't know the character, but I think I'm about ready for Freeing to make another 1/4 bunny girl of a character I like because I have a real soft spot for bunny girls.

As far as the Railgun franchise goes, I'm off the hook bunnygirl-wise for now, since there's only two main characters left, and I'm not sure either of them are popular enough to get the 1/4 treatment. However, now I'm wondering if I shouldn't track down some of their 1/4 Lucky Star figures.

remilias (5年前) #1589910Great review! I really enjoyed reading it and appreciate how thorough you were with it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the kind words. Railgun is an interesting anime, kind of a soft science fiction/slice of life show. I've come to enjoy it a lot.
