The Fix will be very expensive. Since there will be massive purchases to shift the percentages of themed vs prior "feels good" purchases.

It will take very favorable foreign exchange rates to make that happen, and it will happen!"

What does FOMO mean?

I would tell my past self not to buy so many buttons and keychains, I bought way to many sets (because i thought i was saving money this way), and they are hard to sell

If I could to talk to past me around 2005, I'd probably give this figure-oriented advice.

"You know those figures, the Myth Cloths, that started releasing? Well yeah, sure, they're cool and don't worry, the God Warriors and Hilda will have one in the future, but the fact is that Bandai/Tamashii will rerelease them with updated stuff, and Siegfried will be the start of the V3 bodies and they're notoriously shit and basically universally despised despite how many poses they allow.

So don't bother buying any of those, because you'll have troubles with that kind of stuff, and you'll never get to own the complete Asgard MCs anyways, because of a ludicrous surge in prices; also, sorry to crush your dreams, but the movie characters will get next to jack shit save for Abel, so you can kiss your hopes of Eris and the Ghost Five, Derbal and his God Warriors or Astaroth goodbye. there, I just saved you a good amount of money and related problems, the frustration of never having them all and all that jazz.

Oh, and one last thing, under no circumstances should you buy jointed figures. Stick with scale figures, it's for the better. Trust me."

1. Don't impulse purchase

Sometimes you might feel some sort of urge to buy a figure that just looks great. If it's not something that will sell out really quick, my advice is to sleep it over! After several days, if you still want it then it's probably a good idea to purchase it. But often that urge dies down within a few days, so you know not to place a preorder. Usually preorders last a month or two so there's really no rush.

2. Patience is a Virtue

I say this with respect to preowned figures. If you are looking for preowned, stick around and wait for a good deal! Be sure to check across various sites for a good deal to pop up. There really is no fixed price for preowned, and some people or shops just give a better price than others.

*patience is also applicable for auctions! But that's a whole other topic.

3. Buy what you like, not what others like.

Sometimes there's a lot of hype around the community for a certain figure! I remember when Jeanne Alter had a rerelease, there was quite a lot of discussion around it and so i decided to "grab the chance" and PO. But actually I realized that I was caught up in the hype, and cancelled the PO eventually. (She still looks real great though!)

**Personally, I don't really see the point of restricting purchases to characters you know. OCs are really great too, and if you like it I don't think there's a need to stop yourself.

It's oddly reassuring to see I'm not the only person for whom Oreimo did not age well. At first, the Kyosuke-Kirino dynamic was quirky yet believable (I'm guessing similar teenage awkwardness is not uncommon with brothers and sisters) but in season 2, the whole vibe got a little too creepy/obsessive for me.

1. Be more resourceful

When I started, I was buying off locals (who PO'ed) selling at higher rates or after-market prices. I wasn't aware of means to PO and wasn't comparing too many sites and alternatives till a month in when a fellow hobbyist shared his tips with me. To be fair, I benefitted from some of these as there were hard-to-get figures - such as buying Kaido and Ash for half their price now and also dodged a bullet with Ningguang's shipping.

I also wasn't aware of the potential re-releases that are on the horizon and paid after-market - an example was ITEM #549488 that I paid 242.00 for, and the re-release happened literally one day after my payment.

2. Patience and knowing how to hit 'time-out'

Starting new, it was fast and furious for me. Every figure has to be had immediately, and I would search high and low frantically and it was frankly economically unsound, nor enjoyable. Patience is a key in any form of collection, and you also need to recognise when to hit that 'time-out'. It prevents you from burn out and sustain your interests in the long run.

Getting packages in the mail and getting the dopamine rush isn’t the same thing as being happy and satisfied with a purchase. You’re not going to enjoy the campus anime club and you don’t need to try to pretend like you do to meet other people like you.
Also, it’s funny that you referenced Oreimo because it got me too years ago! I just liked the art style. I was a really sheltered and frankly naive kid so I honestly thought it wouldn’t go any further than jokes (and that it might even be about Kiriko accepting that she likes girls, but that’s a whole other can of worms). I bought figmas before I even finished the anime and actually looked into the rest of the story and… stuffed them in a closet once I realized it was NOT jokes.
I threw them out in shame at some point but now I wish I’d at least kept some of the parts. I guess I would tell myself that too. I think I was just very paranoid about anyone getting the wrong idea about my preferences and took advice from the kind of people who think engaging with art always means condoning it. No shade to the people who can still engage with the story for what it is, it’s just a type of transgressive that I’m not personally into.
