PWWI16時間前#83864658So when you were talking about the game selling 4.8m copies, you were only talking about the pre-orders and first day of sales.
And when you said that people bought the game because of the "reputation of the hugely popular Platinum Games" and I tell you that they were in fact not hugely popular, you say you only meant that's why the people in your discord got excited for it and that it's not about being a hugely popular company.
After that you're mainly just saying "It shouldn't be this expensive because the game came out 3 years ago". Which is an weak point to make given that there is no law of nature the claims after x years, all aspects of a game's iconography or characters drop in popularity and selling potential by x amount. It's your wallet and your opinion on what to do with it though.

The original point of discussion was between me and someone else, to who I replied: "To say Nier Automata sold 4m copies because of 2B is so misinformed it's not even funny." which it is because the success is comprised of several factors (waves), it's not a walkback if that's my point all along. I gave PG a mention as what drove the game (first wave) to do so well because if this would've been developed by another company, it's unlikely the game would've turned out so well the way it did. Therefore, they are a big factor in setting up the game's success (foundation) beyond the first wave.

I did not say anywhere that PG's popularity is the sole reason that it sold ~5m copies, this is just the way you've decided to interpret my post so that you could have an argument. You did so again when I mentioned the hardcore gamer Discord part; No, obviously this isn't -only- because of the people in that Discord responding like that. It's an example; the general opinion of similar circles were very positive and excited about it.

FInally, if the relevance part is a weak point then I would like you to try and mention 3 examples of an iconic character figure released some years ago of which the franchise has dried up activity wise right now, yet is still very much in demand despite not being scarce on the aftermarket.

@Dusk: Yeah, that sounds like something mainstream media would say. It's not even wrong compared to the games they usually highlight & how many players those games have, but the # of copies sold tells you quite a few people did actually play it. Lol.

DuskXIII15時間前#83864852I read two lines of that speal and all I could think of was that "I'm a navy seal sniper with over 500 confirmed kills..." meme.
Imagine thinking "normie" word of mouth is the reason a game did well when the "normies" don't even know the game exists for the most part. There's a reason a lot if game reviews have "the greatest game you will probably never play" or some variation if that in the title.
Man that guy is hella wack.

That's exactly what came to mind.

Shogunyan15時間前#83864725Highlights include: "I'm in a Discord comprised of hardcore gamers (20 years+, before gaming became mainstream)," "it's about what real gamers judge to be good or bad," and of course, "eventually it started snowballing in sales because of word of mouth normies."
This guy has so deeply internalized the idea of being a "hardcore gamer" that he has become a living, breathing parody.

PWWI16時間前#83864675No offense to him, but I feel it was either that or the messiest attempt at a walkback I've ever seen.

Demigod_Dan17時間前#83864294I'm obviously talking about the first wave of buyers (pre-order/day 1) and their motivations behind it, not the ones that came after that...I'm in a Discord comprised of hardcore gamers (20 years+, before gaming became mainstream) who are all very capable of judging competence of a gaming company etc. Ofc it was well known in this circle that Yoko previously lacked a proper game company which was part of his earlier games not doing so well (partly had himself to blame for that also), so the first thing we looked at was who would be developing the game. The reaction that followed in the Discord was all-out positive when we saw Platinum Games was the one doing it. So it's not about popularity/huge followings, it's about what real gamers judge to be good or bad and in that regard PG was well respected. Eventually it started snowballing in sales because of word of mouth normies as you said yeah.
But ask yourself how relevant Nier Automata is right now. No anime adaptation, no announced sequel, nothing. Just a game, a great game at that, but still a single player game with almost no replay value either released 3+ years ago. The 2B memes have been so overdone, surely they have been milked dry by now as well. According to the life and death (popularity x current relevance) of other franchises and the goods they marketed, this shouldn't really be as high-priced as it is now if we were to base it on just looks and quality of the figure. It's being scalped into oblivion, and said newbies you mentioned are falling for it.
